Science is about the study of the world and explaining observations, using appropriate methods to test theories and ideas.
Students study Science to help them to make sense of the world, how things work and interact and the impact of human activities. It also encourages them to understand new technologies and make critical assessments of current scientific issues in the media and in their lives. We aim to help students realise the importance of Science on an everyday level and how it is used in a variety of occupations.
As they learn about Science, students will develop a range of skills, including questioning techniques, teamwork, analytical, evaluative, communicative and experimental skills. Whenever possible lesson content will be framed in a way to demonstrate how it relates to technological developments, occupations and their everyday lives.

Students follow the National Curriculum, adopting a spiral, thematic approach. Thus Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught together under a common umbrella theme, of which there are five each year; each year building on the previous.
For example, when teaching about digestion, this may link to energy transfer and then particle theory.
This allows for students to make links between different scientific concepts and allows them to be revisited and extended.

Combined Science: Trilogy
We aim to develop in students an enthusiasm and fascination for Science. This course encourages students to grow in confidence and develop a positive attitude towards Science, recognising its importance in their own lives and society. It enables students to develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods and make informed decisions about Science in the media and society. This qualification provides the skills necessary to study Sciences further.
All students who follow the AQA Combined Science route are examined at the end of Yr11, gaining two Science GCSE qualifications. Details of this course can be found at www.aqa.org.co.uk course code: 8464.
All three Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) are covered within this course, which consists of lots of practical Science to support the theory. The theory of experimental Science that students have carried out throughout the three years is also examined at the end of Yr11.
Some students will be guided to study Triple Science, gaining three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics; the content of which is the same as Combined Science, but certain topics are studied in more depth.
Triple Science – Biology, Chemistry and Physics
We aim to develop in students an enthusiasm and fascination for Science.
These courses enable students to study the three separate Sciences to a greater depth than Combined Science. This course encourages students to grow in confidence and develop a positive attitude towards Science, recognising its importance in their own lives and society. It enables students to develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods and make informed decisions about Science in the media and society.
These qualifications are favourable if the Sciences are to be studied at A-Level and for those who have an aptitude in Science. Their place on this course will be guided by their Science teachers – it is not an option subject.
This course will allow students to gain three GCSE grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It is a course which extends the Combined Science content to a deeper level of understanding. All students who follow this route are examined at the end of Yr11, gaining three Science GCSE qualifications. The theory of experimental Science that students have carried out throughout the three years is also examined at the end of Yr11.
